The United Engine Corporation (UEC) demonstrated the process of manufacturing cooling holes in turbine blades using electrical discharge machining in its Telegram channel.
UEC reminded that turbine blades of an aircraft engine operate at temperatures exceeding 2000 degrees Kelvin, which is much higher than the melting points of the materials they are made of.
To prevent the blades from deforming during operation, a "film cooling" system is used. Cooling air is then supplied through the holes in the blades, creating an air film on the surface of the part that prevents overheating.
The design of this cooling system includes groups of holes less than a millimeter in diameter. At UEC enterprises, the holes are created using electrical discharge machining on a "superdrill" type machine. The machine drills holes with a brass electrode, supplying distilled water to the machining area.
The production of blades for gas turbine engines requires the use of the most complex modern technologies and the latest materials. UEC enterprises have mastered the full cycle of blade production, which is important for maintaining Russia's technological sovereignty.
