Rosatom is testing the Sportcat-85 catamaran made of polymer composites

In the future, a patrol boat and a pilot boat will be built from the same material

The composite division of the Rosatom State Corporation is launching tests of the Sportcat-85 sailing sports and tourist catamaran. This is the first sample in the line of vessels that Rosatom plans to produce from polymer composites. It will be followed by motor and sailing catamarans of various sizes, a high-speed patrol boat and a pilot boat.

The hull and deck of the Sportcat-85 are made of 100% composites — fiberglass, carbon fiber, polyvinyl chloride and epoxy resin. With a catamaran weight of about 1.5 tons, composites account for approximately 1.2 tons. An aluminum analogue would be a quarter heavier, and a steel one would be twice as heavy.

At the end of March, we will conduct strength tests in Sochi and evaluate the driving performance. We will invite a team of professional yachtsmen to check how our catamaran behaves on the wave, sails at different angles to the wind, resists current and lateral drifts. If there are strong winds, and they should be at this time on the Black Sea, we will try to use them to test the vessel under extreme loads to confirm the calculated strength parameters.
Sergey Fedchenko, General Director of the Ulyanovsk plant "Rosatom Vetrolopasti"

Rosatom explains the choice of a catamaran by the global trend: such vessels are more stable in a storm and more spacious than single-hull vessels of equal size. In the exhibition version, the mast is half the design height (at sea it will reach 12 meters).

Earlier www1.ru told about the key characteristics of the catamaran from Rosatom: the deck area of 16 sq. m. accommodates up to 12 people, the displacement of Sportcat-85 is 850 kg.
