Specialists from the Kazan National Research Technical University named after A.N. Tupolev (KNITU-KAI) have successfully completed a project to create an intermediate marine shaft made of polymer composite materials (PCM) and transferred prototype samples to a Russian shipbuilding enterprise, the customer for the development.
The work was carried out at the Scientific and Educational Center "Center for Composite Technologies," where Research Laboratory No. 6 operates under the scientific supervision of Vitaly Kovalyov. The key feature of the developed product is a monolithic structure with a continuous reinforcement pattern and the possibility of software-controlled adjustment of the fiber layup angle. This approach makes it possible to optimize the shaft's mechanical characteristics for specific operational loads, reducing the weight of the structure while maintaining the required strength and rigidity.
The use of composite materials in marine shafts opens up prospects for reducing the metal intensity of ship power systems, increasing corrosion resistance, and lowering vibration loads, which is especially relevant for specialized and high-tech vessels.
