The new Russian aircraft MC-21 with PD-14 engines in serial production has not yet taken to the sky, but Tupolev did not see a competitor in its ancestor — Yak-242. This was stated by the former chief designer of Tu-204 and its modifications, Oleg Alasheyev.
According to him, there is little information about the MC-21, and it is very difficult to get answers to specific questions.
Silence, I don't know any real data about them. They put a new engine on it — PD-14, which, as promised, significantly surpasses the PS-90A installed on the Tu-204 — primarily in terms of service life, but the MC-21 with PD-14 has not really flown yet.
Alasheyev noted that the main problem of the Russian engine industry lies in the resource.
Both the USSR and Russia were and are far behind in this indicator. And no matter how hard we try, we can't catch up — things are moving faster abroad. But at one time, the PS-90A was a good engine. If you compare it with a similar Rolls-Royce model, it is lighter and the consumption is almost the same.
At the same time, Alasheyev admitted that during his work on the Tu-204, Tupolev did not consider the Yak-242 as its competitor. But then, when it came specifically to the MC-21 version, they made progress there, and compared to their plans, the Tu-204 already looked outdated.
However, the latest version of the Tu-204 — the Tu-204SM was an excellent aircraft, we made very significant progress in equipment.
As a reminder, at the end of October, the second experimental MC-21-310 board took to the sky in an import-substituted version, but without replacing five critical systems. Employees of the Irkutsk Aviation Plant worked around the clock to get the second test liner into the sky as soon as possible.
Earlier www1.ru reported that the manufacturer of MC-21 and SJ-100 "Yakovlev" suffered a loss of 4 billion rubles in 9 months of 2025.
