Reuters: Россия попросила ИКАО смягчить санкции для закупки деталей на Airbus и Boeing

37 countries have closed their airspace to aircraft of Russian airlines

Russia has called on the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to ease sanctions on the purchase of spare parts for foreign aircraft. Since 2022, the country has had to purchase parts for more than 700 aircraft (Airbus, Boeing) through "third parties", and this may affect flight safety, Reuters writes, citing a source in the Russian aviation sector.

The agency claims that Russia submitted a request to ICAO after the US lifted sanctions on the Belarusian airline Belavia.

In documents prepared for the start of the 42nd session of the ICAO General Assembly (to be held from September 23 to October 3), representatives of the Russian Federation emphasize that the sanctions contradict international rules.

Russia is the largest country in the world, which depends on commercial aircraft for domestic cargo and passenger transportation. The crash of the An-24 in the Far East confirms that the Russian aircraft fleet is aging.

The documents also note that 37 states have closed their airspace to aircraft of Russian airlines, suspended certificates of airworthiness, and introduced bans on maintenance and insurance of aircraft.

Not all parts for Airbus and Boeing can be imported through "gray" schemes. This means that a significant part of Western aircraft may be grounded (decommissioned).

Reuters contacted the Russian aviation authorities for comment. Rosaviatsiya and the Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation did not respond to the request.

In recent years, the Russian government has taken a course towards import substitution in civil aviation. The country is implementing a large-scale program to switch to domestic aircraft, aviation systems and Russian-developed software.
