The construction project of the North Siberian Railway (Sevsib) will become more efficient if a route to China appears. Industrial expert Valentin Bogomolov is sure of this.
One of the branches of the railway should pass through the regions of Yenisei Siberia, including the Krasnoyarsk Territory, Khakassia and Tuva. Bogomolov believes that the route can also be carried out through the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of China.
The Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region is not the richest province in China, but it is a market with a population of 25 million people. This is more than the entire market of the Siberian and Far Eastern Federal Districts of our country. This is a compact and large market.
According to him, the new railway will increase the investment attractiveness of Yenisei Siberia. He emphasizes that, despite the colossal construction costs, the project is associated with long-term development prospects of the country. To reduce costs, it can be carried out in stages.
The route through China will ensure maximum road load and faster payback. Bogomolov believes that the project will become relevant again by the early 2030s.
Experts believe that the authorities may abandon the construction of Sevsib due to high costs — about 50 trillion rubles. The costs are due to difficult geological conditions. The government considered it impractical to build some sections of the road, for example, from Nizhnevartovsk to Bely Yar.
In the autumn of 2023, Vladimir Putin instructed the government to consider the possibility of creating the North Siberian магистрали. The cargo flow along the planned road is estimated at 115 million tons per year, of which about 50 million tons are coal.
