New Supersonic Aircraft Could Be Equipped with Advanced 177S Engine with 14.5 t Thrust

PD-8 and PD-14 are categorically unsuitable for this task

The advanced engine with the index 177S, if modernized for civilian needs, could be useful in creating a prototype of a new domestic supersonic airliner. This assumption was made in an interview with «Первый технический» by aviation expert Roman Gusarov.

He recalled that initially the 177S is being built for operational-tactical aviation, but if desired, the unit can be adapted for a future flying laboratory — a prototype of a supersonic airliner for testing scientific research.

This is my assumption, it is not yet known what size the aircraft will be. But if we are talking about a prototype, then 177S may well be. But not in the form that is offered for operational-tactical aviation. The hydromechanical control system can be removed and only the electronic one left. Then the production of the power plant is simplified. If you modernize the 177S for civilian needs, then why not?

Gusarov added that PD-8 and PD-14 are categorically unsuitable for the tasks of a promising supersonic aircraft.

The N.E. Zhukovsky National Research Center noted that when developing the supersonic aircraft project, engineers will use the experience gained during the creation of the Tu-144 in the 1970s of the last century.

The A.M. Lyulka Experimental Design Bureau (part of the UEC-UMPO United Engine Corporation) is creating the 177S engine on new principles, said lead designer Georgy Gogaev.
