Some T-Bank clients who set a self-ban on loans received a notification about the closure of their credit cards.
The message stated: "You have a self-ban on loans – your card has been closed under Federal Law 353-FZ."
However, according to the clarifications of the Bank of Russia, the self-ban should not apply to already issued credit cards and payment of debts on existing loans. To understand the situation, journalists from the "Proofs" publication called the T-Bank hotline.
A bank representative confirmed that current credit accounts should not be closed. However, if the card was not activated (that is, no spending transactions were made on it), the bank could close it in accordance with the established self-ban.
From March 1, 2025, Russians can set a self-ban on applying for new consumer loans and borrowings through "Gosuslugi". Later, this opportunity will also appear in the MFC. However, the self-ban does not apply to mortgages, educational loans, some car loans, and guarantees. If the client still needs to take out a loan, the ban can be lifted, but the change will take effect only after a day.
Updated. T-Bank reported that they are closing previously unactivated credit cards. Activated ones continue to operate.
Only previously unactivated credit cards are closed under the self-ban — that is, those for which no spending transaction has been made. At the same time, activated credit cards continue to operate, the self-ban does not apply to them
