Russia and China are conducting joint naval exercises with Iran, called "Security Belt-2026," in the Strait of Hormuz. Experts interviewed by TWZ believe that their ships in the region will not hinder the U.S. plans in the Middle East.
The maneuvers are taking place in the port of Bandar Abbas. The Russian side is participating with the "Stoiky" corvette of Project 20380, among other assets.
According to the Iranian agency Mehr, the exercises are necessary for "testing coordination, tactical readiness, and rapid response." The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) declined to comment on the matter.
What are they saying in the West?
I don't think that a small number of Russian and Chinese ships represents a serious military force compared to the U.S. Navy contingent in the region. Although their presence may have political significance if the U.S. decides to take military action against Iran.
The publication's source did not rule out that the maneuvers were planned long before U.S. President Donald Trump's threats against Iran.
Former CENTCOM Commander Joseph Votel stated that the exercises are "a simple way for Russia and China to demonstrate support for Iran." According to him, this is a demonstration of "great power competition."
A series of international exercises amid tensions in the Middle East
The "Security Belt-2026" maneuvers started after the exercises of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of Iran in the Strait of Hormuz (February 16). They included firing anti-ship cruise missiles at targets, as well as the use of drones. The press service of the Baltic Fleet stated that the Russian corvette "Stoiky" was involved in the exercises with Iranian ships.
Russian and Iranian sailors practiced elements of joint maneuvering, as well as conducted training in communication and ensuring the safety of civil navigation.
The Iranian side involved the frigate "Alvand," the corvette "Shahid Sayad Shirazi," and the missile boat "Neize." The press service of the fleet did not provide other details.
