Serbia is exploring the possibility of involving Rosatom's expertise in the preparatory phase of forming its own nuclear program. Cooperation issues were discussed at a meeting between the Minister of Mining and Energy, Dubravka Djedovic-Handanovic, and the Director General of the Rosatom State Corporation, Alexey Likhachev.

According to the Serbian Ministry, Belgrade is in the strategic planning stage for the future configuration of the electricity sector.

I am proud that after 35 years, we have repealed the law banning the construction of nuclear power plants and have begun to lay the foundations for the future development of nuclear energy in Serbia.
Dubravka Djedovic-Handanovic, Minister of Mining and Energy of Serbia

In the preliminary stage, Serbia is consulting with several technology partners, considering the possibility of using their experience to create a regulatory, personnel, and infrastructure framework for the nuclear program. Rosatom may be involved in expert support and exchange of competencies.

The development of nuclear generation is being considered as one of the options for ensuring basic capacity in the context of increasing energy consumption, the digitalization of the economy, and the course towards decarbonization. The first stages of the program are expected to be completed by 2032, and the introduction of nuclear generation into the energy system will be possible after 2040.

By that time, the technology of small modular reactors will be more developed than today, and we will be able to consider them as an option. When we are institutionally, regulatorily, and personnel-wise prepared, we will be able to choose a partner, a technology supplier, and proceed to the construction process, so that after 2040 we have a nuclear power plant in the grid.
Dubravka Djedovic-Handanovic, Minister of Mining and Energy of Serbia

Rosatom confirmed its readiness for cooperation. Alexey Likhachev also emphasized that the state corporation is already implementing about 30 power units of large and small capacity in China, India, Egypt, Turkey, and Hungary.
