Employees of Irkutsk National Research Technical University (IRSTU) have started 3D printing tooling for the aviation industry. The technology speeds up the preparation of special forms for stamping sheet metal parts of the aircraft. This was reported by the press service of the Irkutsk regional branch of the Union of Mechanical Engineers of Russia.
IRSTU laboratory researcher Lev Shemetov stated that 3D printing technology using plastic is considered promising in the aviation industry. Manufacturing tooling from this material is many times cheaper and faster than using steel and aluminum.
The printed plastic form perfectly withstands the working loads of the press.
IRSTU employees plan to show their project to representatives of the Irkutsk Aviation Plant (branch of PJSC "Yakovlev").
