"They haven't replaced the An-2 in 35 years": USSR pilot harshly assessed the state of the aircraft industry

Oleg Smirnov stated the destruction of production chains and a shortage of technologies

The Russian aviation industry has faced not isolated problems, but a systemic crisis of the entire production chain. Over the past decades, the industry has lost some competencies, enterprises, and engineering schools, Oleg Smirnov, Honored Pilot of the USSR and Chairman of the Civil Aviation Commission of the Public Council of Rostransnadzor, told "Pervy Tekhnichesky".

If they haven't been able to create a replacement for the An-2, which is already 70 years old, in 35 years, then what is there to talk about? Many aircraft design schools have been destroyed. Great names have disappeared – Tupolev, Ilyushin, Yakovlev.

Smirnov noted that modern aircraft manufacturing is impossible without a huge number of components, specialized materials, and high-precision equipment. According to him, the problem affects not only the aircraft factories themselves but also related industries – from machine tool building to metallurgy.

Smirnov emphasized that aircraft production requires millions of components: electronic, electrical, metal, and composite parts, as well as modern machine tools and trained specialists.

Even current aircraft are produced on Western equipment, which is also gradually wearing out. All this needs to be rebuilt from scratch.

However, the restoration of the aircraft industry is impossible without restarting the entire industrial chain, including the production of special aviation alloys and materials for engines capable of withstanding extreme temperatures, concluded the Honored Pilot of the USSR.

Recall that a new LMS-901 "Baikal" is being built to replace the An-2. However, it will not replace the An-2 on regional routes, warned the head of the Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade, Anton Alikhanov. When exactly the new aircraft will enter serial production is still unknown.
