From July 2025, the Bank of Russia plans to launch the widespread use of the digital ruble. It is a unique electronic code that will be stored on the Bank of Russia's platform, and transactions with the digital ruble can be carried out through familiar banking applications.
The largest banks are required to provide their customers with the ability to conduct transactions with digital rubles by July 1, 2025. These operations include opening and replenishing accounts, transferring and accepting digital rubles in their infrastructure.
In 2025, the digital ruble will become available for widespread use, but the full transition and widespread adoption will take several years. Cashless money will not disappear, but will coexist with the digital ruble, providing users with a choice of the most convenient form of payment
Retail outlets with revenue of more than 30 million rubles will also be required to accept digital rubles for payment. Other banks and enterprises will havemore time to adapt - until July 1, 2026 and July 1, 2027.
The main objective of introducing the digital ruble is to increase transparency and control over the spending of budget funds allocated for specific purposes.
All transactions with digital rubles for citizens will be free of charge, which will save on commissions. The digital ruble is expected to provide faster and more convenient payments and transfers, although the amount of wallet replenishment will be limited to 300 thousand rubles per month.
