The DM-185 family of diesel engines, developed within the "Sinara – Transport Machines" framework, has entered the stage of large-scale industrial evolution. The line covers power units from 1000 to 4000 kW and is almost completely localized in Russia, reaching a level of about 99% domestic components.
The project was formed as a universal energy platform for railway, mining, and energy equipment. A unified architecture of key components is used within the family, which allows reducing modernization costs and accelerating the development of new modifications without a complete redesign.
The current line uses both in-line six-cylinder versions and V-shaped 16-cylinder modifications. They are designed for a wide range of tasks – from shunting locomotives to mainline locomotives and industrial equipment with high loads.
Special attention in the project is paid to reducing operating costs. According to the developer, the engines of the family demonstrate a reduction in fuel and engine oil consumption compared to foreign analogues of comparable power. This was achieved through the introduction of a modern electronic control system, turbocharging, and intercooling of the charge air.
In parallel with increasing localization, a deep redesign of the structure was carried out: as part of the import substitution program, over 300 engineering solutions were implemented, aimed at increasing reliability and adapting the engine to Russian operating conditions.
Characteristics of the 12DM-185 diesel engine:
- Localization level — 99.78%
- Power — 1860 kW
- Service life — 25,000 operating hours before the first overhaul, 75,000 operating hours — before major overhaul
- Fuel consumption at full power mode — 205.7 g/kWh
- Complies with environmental standard Stage III A
The DM-185 is considered as the basic power platform for promising new generation locomotives, including shunting-hauling and mainline traction projects. In particular, engines of this series are already laid as the basis for promising railway machines where high traction, energy efficiency, and long service life under load are required.
