The Irkutsk Aviation Plant has completed testing of domestic drilling machines necessary for the production of the MS-21 aircraft. The tool completely replaced foreign equipment, which ceased to be supplied in 2022 due to anti-Russian sanctions.
Specialists took into account the disadvantages of foreign models and developed a more advanced version. The main advantage of import-substituted drilling machines is their lightness and compactness; the weight of the tool has been reduced by using duralumin for the manufacture of the body.
The design has been simplified, and more powerful engines have been installed. Another innovation is the controlled supply of lubricating and cooling fluid.
SMAPs are used for cutting holes in the area where the wing joins the fuselage – one of the most difficult assembly areas. A small and powerful tool is needed here.
Irkutsk drilling machines are three times cheaper than Western ones, and cutting tools are half the price. At the same time, the quality remained at a high level.
Earlier, Rostec reported that the MS-21 aircraft was given the task of competing with Boeing and Airbus.
