Unique Hybrid Machine Tool for Mechanical Engineering Created at NSTU

The machine is capable of combining machining and surface hardening

A new numerically controlled machine tool capable of combining several production processes simultaneously has been developed at Novosibirsk State Technical University (NSTU). This was reported by the university's press service.

NSTU has created a unique hybrid machine tool that combines machining and surface hardening at the same time. This combination increases productivity and reduces energy consumption in the production of parts undergoing surface hardening and multi-blade machining.

According to Vadim Skiba, Associate Professor of the Department of Technological Machine Design and Senior Researcher at the NSTU Engineering Center, the new development expands the technological capabilities of a standard machine tool and can function autonomously in a flexible machine-building production environment.

In addition, the new integrated processing technology allows creating parts with improved surface characteristics. Compared to the current technological process, the new approach allows achieving higher surface microhardness and forming useful compressive residual stresses in the surface layer, which, of course, has a positive effect on the performance characteristics of the manufactured parts.
