Rosatom is negotiating with China and India on joint work on the Northern Sea Route

Despite sanctions, cargo traffic has remained at a record level for the second year

The Rosatom State Corporation is discussing the development of the Northern Sea Route with partners from China and India, and South Korea is also joining the dialogue. This was announced by Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev.

Despite the sanctions pressure, the volume of cargo transportation along the NSR has remained at a record level for the second year – above 37 million tons. The plans are to reach a new maximum, Likhachev said.

The northern supply system is also developing. Chukotka received all the necessary cargo before the freeze-up for the first time in five years – in October 2025, which allowed the region to save at least 100 million rubles on icebreaker escorts. From 2026, Rosatom will begin delivering cargo to other Arctic regions as well.

We are working on fulfilling the President's instruction to create a Trans-Arctic transport corridor. It will connect all territories adjacent to the NSR and combine the capabilities of sea, river, rail and road transport, both in the interests of our country and in the interests of international transport.
Alexey Likhachev, Director General of Rosatom State Corporation
