The US promises to abandon Russian uranium, but does not specify the timing

The head of the US Department of Energy assures that he will follow the law on the prohibition of imports, adopted under Biden

The head of the US Department of Energy, Chris Wright, said that America will be able to completely abandon the import of enriched uranium from Russia in the future. At the same time, he did not name specific deadlines for the termination of supplies.

We will be able to abandon Russian enriched uranium in full compliance with the law passed by Congress. We will no longer use Russian enriched uranium — like Europe, and most of the rest of the world.
Chris Wright, US Secretary of Energy

Earlier, the US Department of Energy announced plans to invest $2.7 billion in the development of its own uranium enrichment facilities over the next 10 years.

As a reminder, in May 2024, Joe Biden signed a law banning the import of uranium from Russia. The restrictions will be in effect until 2040, but exceptions are allowed until 2028 — purchases are possible with the permission of the American department.

In response, the Russian government imposed temporary restrictions on the export of enriched uranium to the United States. Exceptions are possible only with one-time licenses from the Federal Service for Technical and Export Control. The decision was made by decree of Vladimir Putin.
