Specialists from NUST MISIS, in collaboration with colleagues from China, have developed a new composite material. It retains strength and plasticity even at extremely low temperatures below -150 °C, according to the university's press service.
The new composite is based on metal and metallic glass. Thanks to its special structure, the material does not shatter into many fragments upon impact. This effect is ensured by special transition processes at the boundary of crystalline and amorphous metallic alloys.
The appearance of a crack at this boundary leads to jumps of atoms in front of the crack tip, which causes strong local heating of the material. The heated metal is more plastic, it changes the nature of the fracture and slows down the crack. This allows the sample to maintain its strength at low temperatures.
The technology for creating the new composite is based on classical soldering and does not require high costs. The multilayer composite material is planned for use in astronautics, the cryogenic industry, and polar latitudes.
Earlier, www1.ru reported that the Kurchatov Institute is developing a new lightweight and ultra-strong material for bulletproof vests.
