Путь к крылу: история двигателя ПД-14 или как Россия вернулась в большую игру

Designers had to relearn what had long been the norm in the world

The PD-14 engine is a new Russian turbofan engine developed for the MC-21 aircraft and other airliners. The power plant has a bypass ratio of 8.5, a thrust of 14,000 kgf, and a specific fuel consumption of 0.526 kg/kgf·h in cruise mode.

A Fateful Decision

The development of the PD-14 began in 2008 with the realization of the threat to the future of Russian civil aviation in the context of dependence on foreign engines.

Then the authorities made a fateful decision — to create the first domestic aircraft engine in decades that could compete with recognized world leaders. Thus, the PD-14 was born — an ambitious project that was destined to change the face of Russian aviation.

Initial Difficulties

The start of work on the PD-14 was a bold challenge to the global industry, but behind the bold statements lay a difficult reality. Engineers and designers had to virtually relearn what had long been the norm in the world.

The lack of modern infrastructure and necessary technologies, the lack of experience — all this turned development into a struggle in which every day was like an endless duel. Breakthrough solutions that seemed new to Russia had long become standard in the West, and every mistake cost time and precious resources.

PD-14 Characteristics:

  • Engine type — separate exhaust gas from the internal and external circuits
  • Thrust in take-off mode — 14 000 kg
  • Bypass ratio — 8.50 mкр
  • Compression ratio — 41.0 p*S total
  • Specific fuel consumption — 0.526 kg/kgf×h
  • Scheme (compressor = turbine) — 1+3+8 ÷ 2+6
  • Fan diameter — 1 900 mm
  • Number of HP rotor supports — 3

Symbol of Aviation Revival

But even now, when the PD-14 is called a symbol of revival, one cannot forget its painful past. Yes, it has become the first domestic engine capable of competing on a global level, but behind this were years of technological backwardness, lost opportunities, and belated decisions.

The PD-14 is the first Russian engine for civil aviation that can truly compete on equal terms with leading international manufacturers. It combines fuel efficiency, power, and compliance with strict environmental standards necessary for modern aircraft construction. In terms of its characteristics, it is quite comparable to the CFM International and Pratt & Whitney units, which opens the door to the international market.
