A bill is being prepared in the State Duma that could finally set the limit for OSAGO insurance compensation at 400 thousand rubles. The document, which has received support from the Bank of Russia, the Ministry of Finance, and the Ministry of Economic Development, is in the process of preparation for its second reading. The bill aims to enshrine the existing limit on car repair payments.

Currently, insurers are increasingly facing court decisions where, after repair deadlines are missed, they are ordered to pay amounts significantly exceeding the maximum OSAGO payout. According to market participants, this practice is often used by auto lawyers who acquire the right to claim compensation after an accident. In some cases, the amount of claims exceeds one million rubles.

The authors of the initiative believe that such expenses are not covered by the compulsory insurance system and ultimately affect the cost of policies for all motorists.

The bill should exclude the possibility of such claims and bring judicial practice in line with the recent position of the Constitutional Court.

However, the proposal to increase the maximum car repair period from 30 to 45 days was not included in the final version of the document. Insurance companies and car services continue to point out ongoing difficulties with spare parts supplies, especially for European, Japanese, and Korean cars, which often makes it impossible to meet current deadlines.

For most car owners, the changes will not affect the amount of ordinary payments, as the average OSAGO compensation remains significantly below the established limit. However, owners of cars requiring expensive restoration after serious accidents will no longer be able to rely on court decisions to receive compensation exceeding 400 thousand rubles solely due to missed repair deadlines.
