Sanctions for good: MC-21 will fly thanks to Western restrictions

Aviation expert Evdokimov: the costs of developing the aircraft should be seen as an investment in industry

Sanctions against the Russian aircraft project MC-21 resulted in significant costs, but they should be seen as investments in Russian industry, and not as irretrievable losses, said Dmitry Evdokimov, an employee of the Gaidar Institute and aviation expert.

According to him, the launch of the MC-21 into serial production is an important breakthrough for the aviation industry, which indicates the result of large-scale scientific and technical work and coordination of industry under sanctions.

Sanctions against the MC-21 project resulted in significant costs, primarily temporary ones, in the costs of developing and localizing the production of supplies that previously came from abroad. However, they should be seen not as irretrievable losses, but as investments in Russian industry.

According to him, import substitution on the MC-21 was especially difficult in terms of aircraft engines and composite materials.

The head of Rostec, Sergei Chemezov, stated that the MC-21 and SJ-100 aircraft will be put into serial production in 2026. According to Chemezov, enterprises have replaced more than 70% of systems in the MC-21 project with domestic ones.
