KamAZ Improves Quality of K5 Trucks After Defect Issues

The auto plant achieved a technical readiness rate of 95% through localization and quality control

KamAZ has announced a significant improvement in the quality of its flagship model, the KAMAZ-54901 truck tractor with the K5 generation cab, developed on the basis of the Mercedes-Benz Actros. Anton Saraikin, Deputy General Director of the enterprise, reported that the defect rate of this model has become minimal.

Quality problems with the KamAZ 54901 arose in 2023-2024, when the German company Daimler Truck AG ceased cooperation with the Russian auto giant. That is why the company had to urgently replace European components with parts manufactured in Russia and friendly countries. As a result, the technical readiness rate of the truck tractor is currently 95%.

To solve quality problems, KamAZ introduced the practice of "landing a landing party" of its engineers at suppliers' factories, which made it possible to establish control over production processes. Currently, the level of localization of production of K5 family trucks has reached 70%. Of the critical components and assemblies, only the robotic gearbox and drive axle remain imported. In addition, about 20% of the components of the KamAZ R6 turbodiesel are still foreign, although the engine was originally developed jointly with the German-Swiss company Liebherr.
