Western reconnaissance satellites, including US spacecraft, cannot determine the location of Russian submarines in the Arctic. This was stated by military expert Viktor Litovkin.

Russian submarines "can attack the enemy from an ice hole", breaking through the ice with their conning tower, he noted.

On many submarines of the Northern Fleet, it can be seen that there are dents on the conning towers.

In addition, Russian submarines are equipped with special torpedoes for breaking through ice and subsequent surfacing.

According to Litovkin, American submarines can also approach the Arctic region. The crews of Russian submarines hear them and try to "push them out," because no one should be in this sector.

Tandem of "Yasen" and "Borei"

Strategic missile carriers go on a campaign with the support of multi-purpose nuclear submarines. For example, submarines of the "Borei" project (project 955) are accompanied by "Yasens" (project 885). The task of the latter is to protect underwater missile carriers from submarines of a potential enemy, Litovkin added.

In his opinion, Russia has as many nuclear submarines as the United States. Therefore, we can talk about parity.

Earlier, the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) announced exercises by the Canadian and Danish navies, which will be held in March in Alaska and Greenland. At the end of 2025, the Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy, Alexander Moiseev, announced the strengthening of reconnaissance in the Arctic region by NATO countries.
