Fictitious lotteries and raffles remain one of the most common fraudulent schemes spread through spam. This was warned by the Department for Combating Illegal Use of Information and Communication Technologies of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation.
Fake lotteries and raffles remain one of the most popular fraudulent schemes implemented through spam mailings. The example is a standard fraudulent lottery – a bright cover, three free "spins", a guaranteed win of a significant amount and a requirement to pay a fee on the winnings.
According to the department, if the lottery is not organized by a large brand (which must be confirmed on the official website) or an authorized federal body, and the receipt of prizes is not guaranteed, then the risk of financial losses increases significantly.
The ministry reminded that since 2014, state and private lotteries have been banned in Russia. Only authorized federal bodies, such as the Ministry of Sports, can be their organizers. The lottery operator is a legal entity registered in Russia and having an agreement with the organizer.
Participation is оформляется by a lottery ticket (paper or electronic). The terms of the draw, deadlines and prizes must be clearly stated. Minors are prohibited from participating.
Earlier it became known that fraudsters are again using QR codes to deceive Russians. Now they redirect users to fake websites of state resources or to pages offering to allegedly pay utility bills or fines.
