Engineers at the Moscow Aviation Institute (MAI) have developed an innovative method to increase the strength and lifespan of parts made from composite and polymer materials, manufactured on a 3D printer using layer-by-layer deposition. The method will be useful in aircraft construction, as well as in the production of prostheses and orthoses.
The new method allows the production of prototypes of aviation equipment 30% faster and improves tooling, such as molds, drilling jigs, and assembly templates.
The main problem with existing layer-by-layer deposition technologies is the uneven strength of the resulting parts. MAI's development solves this problem, ensuring uniform strength throughout the part.
After printing, the parts are compacted in magnesium oxide powder and then baked at high temperature. This allows them to become 20-30% stronger than with traditional methods, and also makes them smoother after chemical treatment.
