A unique workshop with Russian 3D printing equipment has been created at the United Engine Corporation (UEC, part of Rostec State Corporation). The latest machines will allow the production of parts up to several meters in diameter and weighing up to 400 kilograms, including for the advanced fifth-generation PD-35 aircraft engine.
Previously, the production of such parts was impossible, which forced engineers to assemble them from several elements.
The new workshop is equipped with 3D printing equipment and a unique domestic friction stir welding unit. It connects parts made of heat-resistant materials and reduces the overall weight of the structure, increases the service life of the aircraft engine and improves the strength characteristics of the product.
The PD-35 engine is the most powerful in the history of Russian aviation, weighing about eight tons. Work on the project has been underway since 2016, and in October 2023, engineers conducted the first tests of the gas generator. In February 2024, a new starter generator was produced for the engine.
Earlier, www1.ru reported that Rostec developed an improved version of the machine tool for aircraft engine building.
