AvtoVAZ does not have its own automatic transmission because its development would take a long time, said Oleg Grunenkov, project director of LADA Vesta. According to him, this is not the approach that the concern needs, so the plant uses variators from Chinese partners.

He emphasized that two years passed from the introduction of Western sanctions to the appearance of a car with a variator. If the VAZ workers themselves developed an automatic transmission, it would take more time. Grunenkov added that AvtoVAZ does not plan to create automatic transmissions due to the lack of relevant experience.

Recall that before the introduction of sanctions, AvtoVAZ equipped its cars with a Japanese Jatco automatic transmission or a mechanical gearbox. After the departure of the Japanese company from the Russian market, VAZ workers began searching for a technological partner from friendly countries. As a result, they settled on a variator from WanLiYang. Now the automated transmission is installed only on LADA Vesta with a 1.8 engine.
