The Moscow company "Turbokomplekt" has developed a design for a new heat shield for turbochargers. It will help solve one of the most persistent engine problems – oil entering the turbine section and increasing its consumption.

The development is intended for turbocharged systems and is installed between the bearing housing and the turbine. The shield has three surfaces – mounting, side, and end – as well as a system of special relief holes.

The key idea is four holes in the side of the shield. They connect the area under the turbine wheel and the volute zone of the housing, equalizing the pressure inside the assembly. This reduces the vacuum that can cause oil to enter the hot part of the turbine.

The creation of the holes allows for the equalization of pressure under the wheel and at the gas inlet, thereby eliminating the cause of oil discharge.
Patent description

In fact, the design acts as a local "pressure stabilizer" inside the turbocharger, reducing the risk of exhaust system contamination and lowering oil consumption.
