Rosaviatsiya, together with domestic aircraft manufacturers, is exploring options for equipping Russian airliners with specialized terminals designed to provide passengers with Internet access during flights. This was announced by the head of the agency, Dmitry Yadrov.
An important, interesting task that "Bureau 1440" is currently solving. Ultimately, as part of the project to launch a low-orbit constellation, we are working with Russian manufacturers to equip aircraft with special terminals that will ultimately provide passengers with internet services on board.
According to him, the agency is participating in the project at the stage of certification support: the installed equipment must meet strict aviation safety and reliability standards. In this regard, Yadrov noted, structural changes in the aircraft themselves may be required.
Answering the question of whether onboard internet will be provided free of charge, Yadrov indicated that the final decision depends on economic feasibility — it is necessary to carefully calculate the commercial component of the service.
The development of an aviation subscriber terminal for connecting to satellite broadband internet (BBI) is being carried out by the company "Bureau 1440". Within the framework of the project, a cooperation agreement was signed with PJSC "Aeroflot" for the development of digital services for passengers. Leading Russian aircraft manufacturing enterprises are involved in the integration of the terminal into onboard systems.
