Production of BMD-2M airborne combat vehicles equipped with the new Bereg combat module has begun at the Volgograd branch of Kurganmashzavod (part of Rostec). The first photos of the hulls were published by the Volgograd City Duma.
The frames show BMD-2 hulls with mounts for installing additional навесного бронирования. At the same time, the modernized turrets themselves were not captured in the frame. Apparently, ordinary BMD-2s without the "M" modification can also receive additional protection, military experts noted.
The modernized version of the BMD-2M provides for the installation of a complex of improvements — навесной брони, a new fire control system with a thermal imager, as well as launchers for Kornet anti-tank missile systems. This modernization significantly increases the firepower and survivability of the vehicle.
Back in 2018, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced plans to modernize the fleet of obsolete BMD-2s. We were talking about approximately 600 vehicles, which they wanted to bring to the level of BMD-2K-AU and BMD-2M. Some samples were sent for testing, and one prototype of the BMD-2M was presented at the Victory Parade in Tula.
However, the large-scale program never went beyond statements then. The return to the topic of выпуска BMD-2M with the Bereg module may mean that the project has received a new impetus.
