The Moscow Aviation Institute (MAI) is working on an innovative method for designing suspension units of critical airframe components. It will minimize the consequences of aircraft accidents or hard landings, the university's press service reported.
The essence of the work is to anticipate how the structure should break down under excessive loads.
Thanks to the developed methodology, the suspension units will be destroyed in a controlled manner, like a fuse in an electrical circuit that burns out to save the entire system. In the event of a strong impact during an emergency landing, these elements will break, allowing the unit to separate from the airframe without causing fatal damage to vital aircraft systems. Thus, destruction becomes a managed process, minimizing risks for passengers and crew.
Suspension units of critical airframe components are high-precision mounting points or structural elements that hold the landing gear and engine of the aircraft. They also come into contact with the runway during an emergency landing.
The "safe destruction" project is in the study phase. The main research is scheduled to be completed and the work presented in full within the next two years.
