NPO Energomash, part of the Roscosmos State Corporation, demonstrated one of the most closed and at the same time key technologies of rocket engine construction — modern casting. It is this process that determines whether engines will be able to work reliably in the extreme temperature and power conditions that await the next generation of rockets.
The company has fully mastered advanced types of casting for the manufacture of highly loaded parts of liquid rocket engines. We are talking about casting using investment casting models of alloyed steels, heat-resistant alloys and titanium compositions. The technologies allow creating elements with geometry that cannot be obtained by other methods.
Mikhail Borisov, Production Director of NPO Energomash, emphasized that in the production of liquid rocket engines, casting solves problems that until recently were considered inaccessible to other processing methods. According to him, only this method makes it possible to simultaneously ensure the complex internal geometry of cooling channels, the highest temperature resistance, a minimum number of welded seams and the optimal weight of each part.
Such characteristics are critical for engines that must operate in conditions of ultra-high temperatures, pressures and vibrations. Minimizing welded joints increases the overall strength of the structure and reduces the likelihood of failures. Optimizing weight directly affects the payload of the launch vehicle, and complex geometry allows for more efficient heat dissipation and increased specific impulse.
