In Russia, carriers have appealed to the Ministry of Industry and Trade with a request to develop specialized cars for taxis. According to journalists, taxi companies believe that existing models are not suitable for passenger transportation due to low profitability. Among the proposals are strengthening the car's steering rack, improving the suspension, and introducing a hydromechanical automatic transmission, which is not available on domestic cars.
New requirements for the localization of cars for passenger transportation will come into force in 2026. The Public Council for the Development of Taxis (OSRT) conducted a survey among market participants, which showed that without technical adaptation, existing models cannot operate effectively in large cities. Taxi companies note that the reliability of many components and assemblies leaves much to be desired. For example, engines develop problems with valves and oil pumps at mileages of up to 100,000 kilometers, which leads to rapid wear.
According to OSRT, suspension parts last only 30-60 thousand kilometers, and the steering rack may require repair after only 20 thousand. Automatic transmissions, which should last 100 thousand kilometers, often fail after only 30 thousand. This creates serious problems for carriers who depend on the reliability of their vehicles.
Experts emphasize that for the successful operation of taxis, it is necessary to develop cars that take into account the specifics of their use. For example, Lada Vesta cars, created for personal use, are not suitable for intensive use in taxis. While older models, such as the Lada Granta, had more reliable transmissions that lasted up to 500,000 kilometers.
Taxi companies also face problems related to driver comfort. Long shifts behind the wheel in uncomfortable cars lead to fatigue and reduced quality of passenger service. As a result, drivers receive low ratings in mobile applications, which negatively affects their income.
In response to these challenges, OSRT proposed that the Ministry of Industry and Trade develop a state standard for cars used in passenger transportation. The Ministry of Industry and Trade confirmed that a by-law with a list of models approved for use in taxis will be adopted by the end of the year.
AvtoVAZ also announced its readiness to cooperate with carriers and develop special offers for taxis. Localized cars, they say, are significantly cheaper to purchase and maintain, which can help improve the financial performance of taxi companies.
