Цифровая революция в ритейле: «Пятёрочка» запустила свой первый магазин без касс

The format solves the problem of staff shortages and reduces rental costs

The Pyaterochka chain, part of X5 Group, has introduced a new "phygital" store format that will operate without cashiers. Orders are placed via a special screen using a QR code or application, and the average assembly time is about seven minutes.

The first such store opened on June 25. Its area is about 215 sq. m. The main difference from traditional supermarkets is the absence of cash registers and a shift in emphasis from the sales area to the warehouse: 70% of the area is allocated for storage, which allows increasing the assortment and the cafe area by about 15%.

The new format helps to solve the problem of personnel shortage, which is acute for retail, and also reduces rental costs. At the same time, it will not be possible to completely abandon the staff: employees continue to lay out goods and check the age of customers. Orders are collected both for customers in the store and for delivery via the 5post service.

Previously, similar experiments were undertaken by Vkusvill and Globus. Vkusvill launched round-the-clock stores with access via QR code and self-service checkouts, but now this scheme only works at night. Globus tested Scan & Go technology, which allows the buyer to independently scan and pack goods, but these projects did not receive wide distribution.

In the future, a fully autonomous payment system may appear in "phygital" stores: after scanning the loyalty card, the amount will be debited directly from the linked account. Experts believe that new stores will be built from scratch, and the launch of such formats usually takes from three to six months.
