Specialists from SKB-3 (part of the military-industrial holding company "Kingisepp Machine-Building Plant", KMZ) have improved the technology for casting flanges of cylinder liner sleeves for the "Russian Diesel" engine line. This was reported by the holding's press service.
A sleeve is a metal cylinder on which a cooling jacket is installed. A flange is used to attach the sleeve to the engine block.
At SKB-3, the problem of slag inclusions entering the molten metal when casting sleeve flanges was solved. Specialists developed a stepped slag trap, which cuts off the slag, and clean metal is fed into the mold.
The owner of the technical documentation for the "Russian Diesel" engines (a closed plant in St. Petersburg) is the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation. Then it was transferred to KMZ. Now the holding helps the fleet, including repairing engines from this manufacturer.
Earlier, KMZ eliminated defects in the main ship engine "Russian Diesel 70B 18DRPN 23/2x30". It is equipped with remote automated control systems, automatic warning alarms for the pressure and temperature circuit of oil, water, and fuel pressure.
