Ignored the S-500: The Military Balance Names the Number of Anti-Aircraft Missile Systems in Service with the Russian Armed Forces

Western experts counted only 80 Russian Buk-M1 and Buk-M2 air defense systems

Experts from the British handbook The Military Balance published data on anti-aircraft missile systems (SAMs) in service with the Russian Armed Forces as of 2025.

Western analysts claim that Russia currently has 716 long-range air defense systems (584 units in 2024). This includes 284 S-400 units (+36 units per year), 200 S-300PS (+40), 206 S-300PM (+56), 20 S-300V and 6 S-350.

At the same time, experts at The Military Balance stated that the Russian Armed Forces are not receiving new S-350 complexes. In addition, they ignored the delivery of S-500s to the troops.

The handbook also included information on medium-range air defense systems. Allegedly, Russia has only 80 Buk-M1 and Buk-M2 air defense systems in service. But the British did not write about the new Buk-M3s.

Journalists calculated that the Russian Armed Forces have about 50 Pantsir-S SAM systems. However, they did not mention other short-range systems, including Strela-10, Tor M1 and Tor M2.

The Russian Ministry of Defense does not provide statistics on the number of anti-aircraft missile systems. Officials did not comment on the information in the British handbook.
