The Russian military is armed with BMP-3 infantry fighting vehicles with a powerful 100 mm caliber gun. However, the armored vehicle has certain shortcomings, according to the Telegram channel "Military Informant."
They noted that the main problems of the BMP-3 as an infantry fighting vehicle stem from its non-standard tank layout. This is due to the fact that the vehicle was actually created on the basis of the Object 685 light tank, and it retained all its main features in terms of layout and armor protection.
Naturally, when developing a light amphibious tank, it was not assumed that it should have a troop compartment, and therefore, like any normal tank, the engine was located in the rear. When converting the tank into a BMP, it was necessary to squeeze the troop compartment next to the engine, which led to its inconvenience.
In addition, the BMP-3 was planned to be both a BMD, that is, to be parachuted from aircraft, which is why the vehicle was made as light as possible and lost in armor.
The designers also wanted to preserve the firepower of a light tank in it, adding a 100-mm gun to the 30-mm automatic cannon.
As a result, in the role of the main BMP, we actually have a light tank with weak armor and high firepower, capable of transporting troops. Because of this, the BMP-3 copes frankly poorly with its main role as a BMP - transporting and protecting troops - but it can fire 100-mm high-explosive shells from a closed position and swim.
