Flights of MC-21 aircraft with Russian PD-14 engines to begin in June-July

The fully import-substituted airliner will take to the skies for the first time in the summer of 2025

The certification flights of the Russian medium-range aircraft MC-21 with domestic PD-14 engines are scheduled for the end of June - beginning of July 2025, according to the Minister of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation, Anton Alikhanov.

Test flights of the aircraft are already underway, but currently with foreign engines. The fully import-substituted version of the MC-21, equipped with Russian engines and systems, will take to the skies for the first time as part of the certification program this summer.

Certification is a complex matter. We are already conducting part of the certification work. The first flights in a fully import-substituted configuration with all import-substituted systems and with the PD-14 will be at the end of June - beginning of July. This is the data from our colleagues at UAC.
Anton Alikhanov, Minister of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation

The head of the United Aircraft Corporation (UAC), Vadim Badeha, previously stated that the first prototype of the aircraft in an import-substituted configuration has already been assembled at the Irkutsk Aviation Plant. Currently, specialists are conducting tests of ground systems, after which flight operations will begin.

It was previously planned that the serial production of the MC-21 would start in 2025, but it was postponed to 2026. Rostec explained that the delay is due to the need to complete flight tests and obtain all the necessary certificates.

The MC-21 is a domestic project for a short- to medium-range passenger aircraft, which should replace the Tu-154 and the Tu-204 family in the Russian market. It can also be an alternative to foreign-made aircraft.
