Biodiesel fuel will be purified from glycerin with a solvent containing... glycerin: a new technology has been developed in St. Petersburg

Solvents based on choline chloride and glycerin are used as a cleaning agent

A new method for purifying biodiesel fuel from glycerin has been developed at St. Petersburg State University (SPbSU). This was reported in the press service of the university.

Biodiesel fuel is an environmentally friendly type of fuel made from vegetable or animal fats. In the process of its production, glycerin is formed, which must be removed to avoid engine clogging.

Electrolysis, crystallization, and filtration columns are used to purify biodiesel fuel. But all these methods require significant costs and resources.

The new method cleans the fuel with solvents based on choline chloride and glycerin.

These substances are characterized by low toxicity, non-flammability, low volatility, and rapid biodegradability. In addition, they can be easily reused, which makes them highly sought after in various industrial sectors - from agriculture to energy.

Solvents are considered a new type of environmentally friendly substance. The process of their production is simple and cost-effective.
