A new method for cleaning biodiesel fuel from glycerin has been developed at St. Petersburg State University (SPbSU). This was reported by the university's press service.
Biodiesel fuel is an environmentally friendly type of fuel made from vegetable or animal fats. During its production, glycerin is formed, which must be removed to avoid engine clogging.
Electrolysis, crystallization, and filtration columns are used to clean biodiesel fuel. However, all these methods require significant costs and resources.
The new method cleans the fuel using solvents based on choline chloride and glycerin.
These substances are characterized by low toxicity, non-flammability, low volatility, and rapid biodegradability. In addition, they can be easily reused, which makes them highly sought after in various industrial sectors, from agriculture to energy.
Solvents are considered a new type of environmentally friendly substance. Their production process is simple and cost-effective.
Earlier, www1.ru reported that Russia developed a non-toxic catalyst for the decomposition of petroleum products.
