Russia's largest морской угольный терминал Vostochny Port is idle after modernization. Investors, represented by AO «Vostochny Port», who invested more than 800 million dollars in the facility, are asking President Vladimir Putin for help in the current situation. This was reported by RBC, citing an appeal to the head of state from the managing director of AO «Vostochny Port», Vadim Baibak, which the editors reviewed.
The морской угольный терминал in the eastern part of Nakhodka, Primorsky Krai, has three phases, the last of which was built by AO «Vostochny Port» without government assistance and commissioned in 2019. It is the largest facility of its kind in Russia, with a capacity of 55 million tons. But it turned out that there is no work for Vostochny: the expected transshipment for 2024 is only 25 million tons, which is even less than the угольный терминал handled before modernization.
The largest high-tech specialized угольный терминал with new deep-water berths and high wagon processing speed operates at no more than 50% of its capacity. And, as noted in the appeal, «in fact, investments in modernization and increased transshipment capacity, implemented in accordance with the approved state strategies for the development of the угольный industry and railway transport, turned out to be unclaimed».
In 2025, the investor expects a further decrease in traffic to the terminal. This means that the company's economic performance will decline, and there will be difficulties with paying tax deductions. Social projects are also under threat: in particular, a residential quarter worth 10 billion rubles in the village of Vrangel, which was supposed to completely renovate the village's housing stock. Vostochny Port also financed the construction of the Vostochny ice arena for 1 billion rubles.
To prevent this from happening, the port's management asked President Vladimir Putin to ensure that the terminal is loaded with уголь in 2025 at a level of at least 35 million tons. This is almost 40% more than in 2024. According to RBC, Putin signed the letter to Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak with the note "Report".
