Proper storage of summer tires during the winter is critical for their longevity and safety. Experts from SberAuto service shared how to ensure the safety of these tires until the next season.
If you leave summer tires on the loggia after a rainy autumn without cleaning and drying them, they will lose their performance characteristics due to moisture and temperature changes. Before storing, the tires must be thoroughly cleaned, removing dirt, stones and other contaminants, and wait until they are completely dry. It is important to check the condition of the tread, as well as the presence of cracks or cuts, which may indicate the need for replacement. The pressure level should comply with the manufacturer's recommendations, as deformed tires will not be able to restore their shape and will not fit snugly against the rims.
There are two main methods of storing tires. The first is vertical storage, which is used for tires without rims. In this case, you need to ensure their stability so that they do not fall, and periodically turn the tires to prevent deformation. Removed rims must be cleaned of contaminants that can cause corrosion. You should also check the condition of the valves and gaskets: it is better to replace damaged parts before spring.
The second storage method is suitable for tires on rims - they are recommended to be laid horizontally, layering with cardboard to avoid sticking. For additional protection, you can use covers or bags made of breathable materials, which prevent the accumulation of moisture. This is especially important, as moisture can make the rubber brittle, accelerate tire aging and cause corrosion of the rims.
The optimum temperature for storing tires is from +15 to +25 °C. The room should be ventilated. There should be no sudden temperature changes that can reduce the performance of tires. Tires should also be kept away from direct sunlight, heat sources and chemicals such as gasoline or oils.
