New details have emerged regarding the progress of the serial production of Russian import-substituted Tu-214 aircraft. At a meeting with students of the Kazan National Research Technical University named after A. N. Tupolev – KAI, the managing director of Tupolev, Konstantin Timofeev, answering their questions, said that currently, the project involves "12 aircraft in various stages of readiness".
The production of Tu-214 will enter a conveyor stage in the foreseeable future.
A conveyor line is planned and has been contracted. The goal is to reach a production of 20 aircraft per year. More is not needed; we will see later – anything is possible.
Before that, more than forty systems will be replaced with domestic ones, which still need to be tested.
Which systems are we definitely changing? Computers: they were imported, now they are ours. Not by choice – there are simply no others. We are making our own ground proximity warning systems and collision avoidance systems, our own radars. We are improving the lighting and electrical equipment, the hydraulic system, and the aircraft control system. We have already made them, now we just need to test them. There are 15 such systems in total, and about 30 secondary ones. We are working on them too.
The PS-90 engine will also be improved, as Timofeev said, "as part of improving noise characteristics and thrust: maybe we will add 500 kilograms".
Also, according to him, they will try to use domestic composite materials from Rosatom in the design of the Tu-214. Representatives of KAI will also be involved in the work on composite technologies.
It is very difficult to understand the lifespan of composite products. There are currently no technologies that allow us to confirm whether there is destruction or not, especially at the micro level. If you figure out how to do this, it will be a major breakthrough... It's not like let's just use composite. Boeing still makes a metal wing: riveting is ideal (we also strive for this); the ideal contact of the wing surfaces – they lie almost without gaps, including the leading and trailing edge devices. And the ideal paint. We used to paint with imported paint, but now we use Yaroslavl paint. It is slightly heavier, and the application process takes 3 times longer. This is also a reserve for reducing labor intensity. Why do I emphasize this? To make a Tu-214, you need 800 thousand man-hours, our task is to reduce it to at least 600 thousand. This is an improvement in technology and the manufacturing process. In general, an improvement in the product itself. The fuselage must be perfectly straight. But we need the quality of the metal. We want to work on this first.
Earlier it became known that three more Tupolev workshops were renovated at KAZ for the serial production of the Russian Tu-214 and other products. In total, nine facilities of the enterprise are ready for commissioning.
