S7 Technics Specialists to Extend Service Life for Approximately 800 Russian Aircraft

Russian S7 Technics (part of S7 Group) has mastered the repair of some of the world's most popular aircraft engines: the French-American CFM56. This refers to the CFM56-5B engines installed on the Airbus A320 and the CFM56-7B for the Boeing 737.

According to the Kommersant newspaper, there are currently about eight hundred aircraft in the country with such engines. One of the main operators is the Aeroflot Group. Before Russian specialists mastered the overhaul of low-pressure turbine (LPT) modules, low-pressure compressor (LPC), and gas generator (hot section) of the engines, airlines were forced to buy used engines if these parts failed. Their repair was the most difficult.

Sources from the publication claim that used CFM56 engines with an acceptable margin of safety cost airlines between $8 and $16 million per unit. But now this problem has been eliminated. Overhauling LPT and LPC engines can be done in less than 90 days, and it will cost less than buying an engine on the secondary market.

S7 Technics confirms that it is now engaged in the previously difficult overhaul of engines. Since October 2022, 12 such overhauls have already been carried out in the workshop in Sheremetyevo, and the repaired aircraft are successfully operated by Russian airlines.

Minor local repairs of CFM56, as reported to "Ъ" by S7, have been carried out for a long time, since 2015. This involves disassembling the engine to fix a defect, followed by assembly and replacement of compressor blades, turbines, and combustion chambers. More than 300 such repairs have been carried out in Domodedovo and Mineralnye Vody. The company plans to launch its new test bench for testing engines after overhaul.
