Russia and Belarus will benefit from potential cooperation in the development and production of the Su-75 Checkmate, a single-engine stealth fighter. This was written by military expert Boyko Nikolov in an article for Bulgarian Military.
According to Nikolov, by involving Belarus in this project, Russia will distribute the economic and technological burden. Minsk, with its developed base of components for electronics, can make a significant contribution to the creation of the Su-75.
Currently, the Belarusian Air Force operates «a modest fleet of Soviet-era aircraft». As of 2025, it includes about 25 MiG-29 multirole fighters acquired in the 1990s and a number of Su-25 attack aircraft.
Despite the modernization of the MiG-29 to the MiG-29BM standard in the 2000s, the fighters are considered obsolete. They lack stealth and features to participate in network-centric warfare.
The Su-25s are also outdated, Nikolov emphasizes, as they find it difficult to counter modern air defense systems. Belarus operates several modern Yak-130s, which can be used as light attack aircraft. But these aircraft are not suitable for gaining air superiority.
For Belarus, partnership with Russia offers an opportunity to modernize its Air Force and revive the aerospace sector, but significant obstacles remain. These are limited industrial capacity and economic constraints from the West.
