Russian T-72B3M and T-80BVM main battle tanks may be vulnerable to 120-mm M829A depleted uranium shells for M1A1FEP "Abrams" tanks. This was warned by military analyst Evgeny Damantsev.
He emphasized that the cores of the shells have a high ability to penetrate armor. For the M829A1 version, this coefficient reaches 670-700 mm, posing a significant threat to the frontal armor plates of the turrets and hulls of the T-72B3M and T-80BVM MBTs when firing from a distance of 2000-2500 m.
For the M829A2 modification, this indicator reaches 740 mm, providing a high probability of penetration of the frontal plates of the T-80BVM MBT turrets in case of hitting the 4S23 elements of the Relikt dynamic protection (ERA) in the gun areas.
The M829A3 modification is capable of penetrating armor up to 800–830 mm thick, which makes it dangerous for the frontal projection of the main battle tanks T-80U and T-90A when firing in the gun sectors.
At the same time, the frontal armor plates of the latest T-90M "Proryv-3" have sufficient protection against all three types of shells at a firing range of more than 1500-2000 m.
Earlier www1.ru reported that T-80 tanks became faster thanks to GTD-1250 engines.
