Maximum automation: ROS will be unmanned in the early stages

Roscosmos chief Bakanov: We will deploy similar infrastructure on the Moon

The Russian Orbital Station (ROS), which will replace the International Space Station (ISS), is expected to operate without human involvement in the early stages. This was stated by Roscosmos Director General Dmitry Bakanov.

ROS should be as highly automated as possible so that it can operate without a human being.
Dmitry Bakanov, Roscosmos chief

According to Bakanov, Roscosmos cannot risk human lives because "this infrastructure will be deployed on the Moon". The station must be self-sustaining or operate with the support of a robotic system, he explained.

When all technologies have been perfected and nothing threatens human life, we will then gradually begin sending people there.
Dmitry Bakanov, Roscosmos chief

The first module of the new station will be deployed in 2028. At the same time, the deorbiting of the ISS will be completed in 2030. Roscosmos plans to synchronize work in these areas.
