Unique spark gap sharpener for advanced lasers and medical equipment created in Russia

The development will allow the production of new generation high-voltage pulse generators

The Rosel holding (part of the Rostec Group) has developed a controlled gas-filled spark gap sharpener with unique characteristics for high-voltage pulse generators, lasers and medical equipment. This was reported in the press service of the enterprise.

The technology for creating controlled spark gap sharpeners was developed by the Plasma Research Institute of Gas Discharge Devices.

Today, there are no domestic components with such characteristics on the Russian market. Our spark gap was developed on an initiative basis and will allow us to create new generation high-voltage pulse generators with improved electrophysical parameters.
Sergey Maksimov, General Director of Plasma

The device allows to reduce the size of radiographic equipment, reduce the energy consumption of equipment and the load on electrical networks.

The spark gap sharpener is a sealed tube filled with inert gas. It does not conduct electricity and accumulates energy.

When a signal is applied, the system creates conditions for an instantaneous breakdown of the gas, which translates it into a conductive state for fractions of a second. This process helps to form high-voltage pulses of ultrashort duration, which are necessary for powering X-ray tubes.

The device starts quickly and works stably. A metal-ceramic housing is provided for its protection, and the hydrogen inside can withstand pressures up to 100 atmospheres, comparable to the pressure at a depth of 1000 meters.

Earlier www1.ru reported that Rostec summarized the results of its work in the medical field in 2026.
