Natural protector for cells discovered at UrFU

Substances from bracket fungi protect against the side effects of chemotherapy

At the Ural Federal University (UrFU), a new way has been found to protect healthy cells of the human body from damage during chemotherapy. Scientists have found that substances from the bracket fungus (Ganoderma applanatum) contribute to this.

Specialists studied three types of bracket fungi common in the Urals. The experiment was conducted on fruit flies. Extracts with the chemotherapeutic drug etoposide were added to their diet.

Scientists have found that two extracts did not protect the insect cells, but rather enhanced the destructive effect. However, the third extract reduced toxic manifestations.

Specialists plan to further study the mechanisms of fungi and conduct experiments on more complex organisms.

Earlier, www1.ru reported that UrFU scientists defeated cancer with a new drug.
