Sukhoi Design Bureau Tests Chassis of New Heavy UAV S-76

The drone carries 1.5 tons and is capable of taking off even from a dirt road without a runway

As part of the implementation of the National Project "Unmanned Aircraft Systems," PJSC UAC continues ground and flight tests of the heavy BTS VAB S-76 unmanned aerial vehicle, developed by the Sukhoi Design Bureau. The engineers are focusing on the chassis, a critical element of the design that ensures the UAV's takeoff, landing, and ground operation at a maximum takeoff weight of 1500 kg.

The new unmanned platform is designed to solve military and civilian logistics tasks. The uniqueness of the S-76 lies in its chassis system, adapted for heavy loads and capable of operating on unprepared ground sites.

Technical features of the chassis and platform:

  • The chassis design is designed for multiple landings with a full load (up to 300 kg) and operation on unequipped runways.
  • Composite and shock-absorbing elements are used to reduce the load on the fuselage when touching the ground.
  • A real-time chassis strut condition diagnostics system is integrated, a key element for autonomous operation.

The S-76 UAV (in the "large" version) has a takeoff weight of 1500 kg, a cruising speed of 180 km/h, and is capable of traveling up to 1000 km in round trip mode (500 km one way). Its cargo compartment with a volume of about 2 m³ maintains a set temperature, which makes the device suitable for delivering medicines, equipment, and other sensitive cargo.

The project has a unique feature: one operator can control up to 12 unmanned vehicles using satellite communications via the GLONASS system. There is also a light modification of the S-76 MBS with a payload of up to 50 kg and a range of up to 400 km.
